What is the difference between singlemode and multimode fiber?

Singlemode (OS2) carries a single light path through a 9-micron core and is built for long distances and high bandwidth, which makes it the standard for campus runs, carrier links, and futureproof backbones. Multimode (OM1 through OM5) uses a larger 50 or 62.5-micron core to carry multiple light paths over shorter distances, which makes it cost-effective for data centers, LANs, and in-building runs. Read more on these differences in our blog.

Which multimode grade do I need: OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, or OM5?

The grade sets the bandwidth and the supported distance. OM1 (62.5/125) and OM2 (50/125) are legacy grades for slower or shorter links. OM3 and OM4 are laser-optimized 50/125 fiber built for 10G, 40G, and 100G in the data center, with OM4 reaching longer distances than OM3. OM5 adds support for short-wavelength division multiplexing for higher-capacity links. Match the grade to your switch optics and the distance you need to cover. We carry all five and can help you choose.

What connector type should I order: LC, SC, ST, FC, or MTP/MPO?

LC is the most common today and dominates data center and enterprise equipment. SC and ST are widely used in older installations and many security and AV systems. FC is common in test and measurement and some carrier gear. MTP/MPO is a multi-fiber connector used for high-density 40G/100G trunks and breakouts. Check the port on your hardware, and order both ends to match what each device requires.

What is the difference between OFNR (riser) and OFNP (plenum) jackets?

The jacket rating determines where the cable can legally and safely run inside a building. OFNR (riser) is rated for vertical runs between floors. OFNP (plenum) carries a higher fire rating and is required for runs through air-handling spaces such as drop ceilings and raised floors. When in doubt, plenum is accepted in more locations, but always confirm with your local fire code and installer.
